Quantified Self – Mhealth – Mobile Health  – Gentle Nudges –

It’s a given… we all want to be *healthier*… we want to eat better, sleep better, and exercise, etc.  Researchers at MIT have found that social networks can influence health behavior.  By sharing your progress with your social circles, it is proven that you have a higher chance of success in achieving your overall goal… better health and healthier choices.  Social sites like I Move You, by Contagion have collected some very interesting data.  They show that if someone in your Twitter or Facebook circle engages on their site, you or your friends have a higher likelihood that you too will pursue a healthy activity.  This page will highlight certain health related technology items I have run across and found interesting.

 Quantified Self:

The concept of quantified self is learning more about you and your activities than you probably even care to know.  But, some of you will find this quite inspiring… these applications and devices enable you to track everything you do… everywhere you walk, run, exercise, eat and sleep.   The healthcare implications of quantified self are enormous if people become engaged and willing to monitor their activity and strive to improve their “good behaviors”.

Fit Bit

Fit Bit is a small tracker you wear or carry on you.  It can calculate the number of calories you burned each day and is far more than a typical pedometer.  Click here if you want to see how sophisticated this little device is.

RunKeeper

RunKeeper by FitnessKeeper, Inc. is a fitness tracking program for your laptop and has a free iPhone and Android version.

You can track your fitness, calories burned, and share your data with your friends. It interfaces with Facebook and Twitter and even gives you a personal records summary.  By sharing your progress with your social circles, research has proven you have a higher chance of success in achieving your overall goal… better health and healthier choices.

Rock and Run

Apple and Nike have teamed up to create an interface so you can monitor your exercise progress from your iPhone, Nano or iPod.

 Jawbone Up:

Another device made possible through Bluetooth v4.0, this bracelet ambitiously tracks pretty much everything you do — how much you sleep, run, walk, work out, and how many calories you eat and burn — then gives you the ability to share all this info with the rest of the world.

Health Question and Answer Forums:

Avvo

At Avvo, our mission is to help people make the best decisions for their important medical needs. Finding the right doctor often comes at a critical time in life, most people have no idea how to go about doing it, and resources that offer answers to questions are overwhelming and difficult to understand.

Avvo is guided by two basic principles:

    1. Provide an unmatched level of transparency. Many of the online resources available today only show information about the doctor who pays the most to be there. Avvo plays no favorites. We provide an unparalleled level of transparency that shines the same light on all licensed professionals, enabling people who may know very little about medicine to make smart, informed decisions.

  1. Provide more information and better guidance. We believe that access to easy to understand information about doctors, coupled with guidance on how to use that information, is the best way to help people choose the right licensed professional. Information is empowering: the more people learn about their doctors and their condition, the more comfortable and confident they’ll feel seeking help. This benefits patients and great professionals.
