Amen... Why EMRs...as currently engineered, fail to make the grade
As I have mentioned on many occasions in these blog pages, EMRs, as currently engineered are a nightmare. Don't take my word for it. I'm simply one physician who will not use an EMR as they are currently designed. Look at what's happening amongst docs at large. The adoption curve has flattened, docs have not realized an ROI. EMRs have for the most part been designed for the generalist, but throw in a few
'templates" and the specialist theoretically can use them too...nonsense.
I also believe the current EMRs encourage fraud and abuse, and while they help us (slowly) document an encounter---they have no other benefit at the point of care, such as plotting a treatment algorithm, pointing out recent lit references, etc.
Dr. Reece does a wonderful job his blog listing the reasons why EMRs are '"in a funk"
Now...don't misunderstand me. I think that technology holds enormous promise and potential for medicine. Unfortunately, every EMR platform currently out there is essentially based on the same premise and backend methodology...data input; in an inefficient, wasteful and costly manner.
