Health Care and Social Media:

Establishing your digital presence as a physician… where to begin?

I am very happy to receive a lot of requests from physicians to assist them in establishing a digital presence.  This is a huge step — in the right direction.  Where do you start? How?

Your social media strategy as a healthcare professional needs to begin with an anchor, a foundation or a home base.  That can be a blog, or a deeply integrated website… it doesn’t matter.   You need to define and control the message and manage your tiny piece of cloud based real estate as you would manage your office ( I hope:-))  Then utilize your outposts… FB, Twitter, etc.. to share your knowledge and content with others…. Sound good?

feel free to reach out– as many have… I more than willing to assist you!

HealthCare and Social Media : Orthopedic Minute:

My name is Howard Luks and this is your Orthopedic Minute.

I have been at a bunch wonderful folks at a number of conferences recently.  I have met a number of healthcare executives, various device manufacturer executives, and I have met with a lot of physicians.  I have actually been quite pleased because I have been recognized by a number of those physicians and executives simply because of my social media presence.

How do I venture into the HealthCare-Social Media World ???

I’m interested… I get it… The question that keeps you arising is what do I do, how long does it take, and how do I do it— I am interested in getting into “social media” or — “I am not quite sure how to do it.”  My answer is usually you have to begin with a home base, a foundation, if you will… and that could either be a blog or well-outfitted Healthcare 2.0 *compliant* website.

Either way you need to be able to produce actionable, meaningful, evidence based (perhaps) content — and then you need to use your *outposts* in social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to link back to the articles and the content that you are producing.  This has been the message that I have put forth this week and this was obviously for a very limited audience.  But I hope you find it useful. As usual,  feel free to reach out to me anytime you are in need of a hand.  or a little bit of assistance.  I would love to help you take care, bye.

    Howard:

Excellent advice for the neophyte social media dabbler. While content generation provides value, there is ample benefit from curation too. If doctors are strapped for time, but have identified a worthwhile article in a newspaper or journal that they think their patients or the general public could benefit from, then offering a URL on their site is helpful. By the same token, physicians can provide notices of health screenings and disease-based charity events that they are involved in on their site and/or Twitter/Facebook feeds. Every small digital footprint helps to establish trust. Something you have cultivated quite well here, Howard.

I’ll echo Carmen’s thoughts on this one, Howard. Yours continues to be a digital presence worth modeling. :)

The good news is more and more doctors are apparently active on social media sites, though with the caveat that their involvement is still more on the personal side rather than professional. Still, I think it’s safe to say the trend will continue towards more participation on the professional side once doctors get a feel for the platforms and the potential they have for information sharing and collaboration.

    All the best
