Congratulations … you survived residency. Now what?
Thousands of residents from all over the country are actively considering their employment options. They are interviewing for positions at institutions, large multi-specialty groups or smaller groups across the country. It has never been more important for a resident to be well versed in the multitude of changes actively creeping across the national healthcare landscape. Many localities are more affected then others… but few will be spared as time moves on.
Many of our own residents are considering positions with local groups. In all honesty, many of those groups will be lucky to survive the next 5 years. Their referral networks are drying up, huge institutional groups are moving in and well entrenched large multi-specialty groups control the majority of lives in a large area and are actively clawing patients back under their umbrella.
The healthcare landscape is changing very rapidly … do NOT assume that the group you are interviewing with has a clear understanding of the implications of the issues listed below. Many of us are still confused too.
We will explore this more in depth in future posts. But a firm grasp of the following concepts and how each group you are speaking to is planning on dealing with them is of paramount importance.
- Performance versus Productivity : they are not the same.
- Narrow networks
- Multi-specialty groups
- Institutional encroachment
- Risk based payment models
- ACA plans
- value based care
- bundled payments.
- 2015 Medicare Value modifier
- PQRS/ MU pass throughs
Let’s start a great discussion where physician leaders and residents can communicate and share their concerns — and we’ll all learn.
