A patellar dislocation is a painful, uncommon cause of knee pain. There are many potential causes of a patellar dislocation. They include: sports injuries, trauma, loose ligaments, or problems with how the bones in your knee formed.
The patella glides in a groove on the front of your knee. The patella should sit perfectly in the center of the groove, and the groove should be deep enough to accommodate the patella. In addition there are a number of ligaments which hold the patella in place. If anything is wrong with the anatomy or the tension on the ligaments, or if the ligaments tear because of injury then your patella might dislocate or slide out of the groove.
In this video Dr Jeff Berg and I talk about the various treatment options available to treat a patellar dislocation. As surgeons we have many options available. This video will review the options we have and when they might be appropriate to use if you have patella instability.
