We Exercise To Gain, Not To Lose.

Howard J. Luks, MD Published Apr 1, 2025 Read time: < 1 min

Reframe why exercise is important. Not to lose, but to gin.

I’m trying something different for the next few months. I’ll be sending short but meaningful messages meant to reframe how we approach and think about fitness. Please comment below—I am very interested in your thoughts.

Exercise is not for loss.

It’s only for gain.

You’ve been told to move to lose—

~lose weight,

~lose fat,

~lose guilt.

But that’s not the point.

That’s never been the point.

You don’t exercise because something’s wrong with you.

You exercise because you’re investing in yourself.

~You gain strength.

~You gain energy.

~You gain focus, confidence, patience, and sleep.

It’s not punishment.

It’s permission— to feel better in your body and show up stronger.

Forget what you’re trying to lose. Start noticing what you’re gaining.

Love your information, Dr Luks. I look forward to your newsletters. Your information spared me a surgical intervention for a medial degenerative meniscal tear.
    All the best,
    Barbara
