You might stop reading a book because it is boring. That’s not what we’re talking about.
We encounter what we perceive as “boredom” less often because we are attached to our little digital friends. We’re busy. But we’re lost.
These online travels are often wasteful instances and we rarely grow from these interactions with our digital friends.
Boredom is the failure to develop a capacity to explore and understand something while doing nothing else.
What do you do when you’re left alone with yourself? How do you feel?
Do you wallow in self-pity? Or are you able to thrive in these instances being alone in your own mind?
Mindfulness enables you to seize on these moments, to explore your awoke conscience state.
These moments of perceived boredom can become incredible opportunities to explore yourself.
Our hyperconnected, always-on world has also led to hyper comparisons that are very damaging to our psyche and well being. These comparisons creep up on us when we are alone, when we are in real-life social situations, or when we are peering into someone else’s social situation thru their carefully crated feeds. Whether alone, or with a group, we wonder why others seem so happy, so fulfilled. It’s a grand social illusion. It’s not real.
In reality, those around you are broadcasting their own self-doubt or anxiety. Look for it, it’s readily apparent. Human frailty abounds. How do we react in these moments? Often we conform to these situations. We fall into a trap that brings us down to the same level. We need to be able to step away, to see situations for what they really are. We need to see those around us for who they really are. You’re not going to spend your way out of this.
Mindfulness training enables you to treasure these moments alone… it enables us to see these negative emotions for what they are, and allow us to let these negative emotions pass through our consciousness and then out of our sphere of concentration.
Try it. We live in a complicated world. The more tools we have to adapt and thrive, the better off we will be.
